Description
The Cluster for Improving Healthcare Outcomes through Sensory Technology at Dartmouth is recruiting student research interns to work on AI-powered wearable systems for healthcare applications.
We offer flexible positions (hourly during the academic term or full-time summer internships) for motivated students interested in building hardware systems and mobile platforms that enable sensing and stimulation for improved health outcomes.

Research Areas
- AI-Powered Wearable Systems: Wearable platforms for physiological monitoring, sleep analysis, and cognitive enhancement.
- Embedded Machine Learning: On-device AI for resource-constrained wearable devices.
- Maternal and Women's Health: Wearable systems for pregnancy monitoring and labor detection.
- Sleep and Mental Health: Nightmare detection, sleep optimization, and neurofeedback interventions.
- Biological Computing: Brain organoid computing and biological computing for industrial applications.
Available Tracks
- Hardware Engineering: PCB design, analog front-ends, sensor integration, benchtop testing, and wearable prototyping.
- Embedded Systems: Firmware development, low-power optimization, real-time signal processing, and BLE communication.
- Mobile/Software Systems: Mobile app development, data pipelines, cloud integration, and user-facing health applications.
- Machine Learning: Biosignal processing, on-device inference, model optimization, and health prediction algorithms.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled undergraduate or Master's student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, or related field.
- Relevant coursework or project experience in one or more of: circuit design, embedded systems, signal processing, mobile development, or machine learning.
- Programming experience in Python, C/C++, MATLAB, or similar.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
Additional Experience That Will Strengthen the Application
- Hands-on experience with PCB design tools (Altium, KiCad, Eagle) or bench instrumentation.
- Experience with embedded platforms (ARM Cortex-M, ESP32, nRF, Arduino).
- Familiarity with mobile development (iOS/Android) or ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
- Prior research experience or publications.
Position Details
Location: Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH (on-site or hybrid depending on project requirements)
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate aligned with Dartmouth research standards
Duration: Flexible (academic term at 10-20 hrs/week or summer internship full-time)
Start Date: Rolling; positions available throughout the year
